The importance of local associations, maybe particularly the County Associations is sometimes overlooked. Particularly in the West of Scotland there were Associations in Renfrewshire and Ayrshire before the 1939-45 War, those of Dunbartonshire and Lanarkshire started up after the War, the Glasgow Association was rather short lived with its members splitting between the four mentioned above but there were also groupings eslewhere, eg Stirlingshire. They organised county events – cross-country relays and championships, track championships, selected teams for inter-counties matches and helped local clubs organise and operate their own races. The Ayrshire Harrier Clubs Association has been active since 1924 with their first county championships held in January 1925. We are covering some of the history of the AHCA to indicate just how busy it was – visit the links below to follow what we have done so far – there is more to come.
